From May 27th to June 10th, the Metropolitan Expressway will be closed all day on Route 1 Haneda Line. Traffic congestion is expected on surrounding roads as part of the Metropolitan Expressway will be closed for two weeks. Let’s take a closer look.
Traffic is closed due to the replacement work of the Daishi Bridge, and the closed section is Expressway Kanagawa Route 1 Yokohane Line Daishi entrance to Expressway No. 1 Haneda Line Heiwajima entrance (up/down), Expressway No. 1 Haneda Line Showajima JCT to Expressway Wangan Line Tokai JCT (up/down). The entrances will be closed from the Daishi entrance to the Heiwajima exit on the inbound train, and from the Shibaura/Katsushima entrance and from the Heiwajima entrance to the Daishi exit on the outbound train. The period is from 5:00 on May 27th to 5:00 on June 10th.
Heavy traffic jams are expected on the Metropolitan Expressway and general roads around the road closures during the period of road closures, and the scale of the congestion is on par with the end of the year and the end of the fiscal year, when there are particularly many congestions throughout the year.
During the period when traffic is closed, traffic volume will increase throughout the Metropolitan Expressway. It is predicted that traffic jams that usually subside around 19:00 will continue until 22:00.

Normal time 16:00 to 19:00

16:00 to 19:00 when traffic is closed
The most congested point is the Namamugi JCT → Daishi exit, which is usually a maximum of 30 minutes, but is predicted to be a maximum of 150 minutes. The busiest hours are from 6:00 to 22:00. The next most crowded section is Bijogi JCT → Takebashi JCT, which usually takes 50 minutes at maximum, but at maximum 110 minutes. The busiest hours are between 16:00 and 19:00.

When traveling between Tokyo and Kanagawa during the road closure period, it is possible to travel via the Wangan Route as a detour. In addition, when using the entrances and exits around the closed section, it is recommended to use other surrounding entrances and exits, as congestion is expected on both highways and general roads around the Daishi entrance and Heiwajima entrance.

The late-night and early-morning hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. are relatively unoccupied. I invite you to use it.
Shortening the construction period by replacing the slide
The closure of traffic this time is a measure associated with the construction of replacing the Kosoku Daishi Bridge with a new bridge. Kosoku Daishi Bridge is a bridge connecting Tokyo and Kanagawa that opened in 1968, and has a traffic volume of 80,000 vehicles per day. Due to the large amount of traffic and the wide spacing of the piers to minimize the impact on the Tama River, the structure is prone to damage, and 1,200 cracks have been found so far. The strength of these piers has been maintained through daily inspections and repairs, but construction work will be carried out to make them excellent piers with long-term durability and maintainability.
The new bridge will have a highly durable structure that is resistant to cracks, and a maintenance space (permanent scaffolding) will be installed under the road so that inspections and repairs can be made at any time. In addition, the width will be expanded from 16.5m to 18.2m based on the current structural standards.

Bridge replacement work would normally take a long time, but in order to shorten the period of road closures as much as possible, various measures will be taken to shorten the construction period to two weeks.
Specifically, a replacement bridge (approximately 300m in length) will be constructed next to the existing bridge in advance, and will be replaced with the existing bridge during the period when traffic is closed to shorten the time. Rails for movement are built under the existing bridge and the new bridge, and it is a mechanism to replace and install the bridge by sliding on the rail. We also have rainproof facilities so that work can be carried out even in rainy weather, so that the impact of weather on construction is minimized. Thanks to these measures, construction can be completed in two weeks.
