“Le Rouge et le Noir ~Red and Black~”, which was performed from March to April 2023, is a musical based on the novel by literary great Stendhal. The main character is Julien Sorel, a young man blessed with good looks and talent, who was born as the son of a carpenter but has ambitions to rise in the ranks. In the first half of the story, he falls in love with his tutor, Madame de Renard (Louise), and in the second half, he engages in a love affair with Mathilde, the daughter of the Marquis de La Mole, and in the end, he heads down the path to destruction.
At the Takarazuka Revue, “Red and Black” was adapted into a stage play written and directed by Yukihiro Shibata in 1975 (the title at the time of its premiere was “Love is My Life”), but this work was first performed in Paris in 2016. It is something that Takarazuka Revue performed this for the first time in Japan as “Le Rouge et le Noir ~Red and Black~”. After that, it was performed as the French rock musical “Red and Black” under the sponsorship of Umeda Arts Theater from December 2023 to January 2024.
Star group top star Rei Makoto, who plays the main character Julien Sorel, has starred in four films: “Rock Opera Mozart” in 2019, “Romeo and Juliet” in 2021, this work, and “1789” from June to August last year. Starring in a French rock musical, he is demonstrating his triple ability in singing, dancing, and acting.
