A “new product/business progress report” meeting was also held from local businesses to Chairman Iris Ohyama.

Iris Ohyama Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, President and CEO: Akihiro Oyama) signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture (hereinafter referred to as Kesennuma City) on April 24, 2024. In addition, graduates of the Management Mirai Juku, a human resources development program for local managers implemented as part of the Tohoku Future Creation Initiative, conducted a business project with Kentaro Oyama (Chairman and Representative Director of Iris Ohyama Co., Ltd.), who was the principal of the school. We also held a “new product/business progress report meeting” to report on progress.

■Agreement details
Based on this agreement, Kesennuma City and our company will cooperate with each other and utilize the various resources of both parties to collaborate in areas such as disaster prevention and mitigation, sustainable community development, industrial promotion, startup support, education and human resource development. We will strengthen our efforts. Through regular discussions, we are considering collaboration in a variety of fields, including cooperation in supplying necessary supplies in times of disaster, support for energy-saving measures aimed at decarbonization, and reduction of marine plastic waste.

The “Tohoku Future Creation Initiative” is an initiative started in 2012 with Kentaro Oyama as the representative founder, with the aim of autonomous and creative reconstruction of the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The Management Future School, headed by Kentaro Oyama, is a community leader development project that involves creating a vision for the future as a manager and changing their mindset through a six-month curriculum. The program was conducted for business owners in seven cities and towns in two prefectures

including Kesennuma City, and produced 153 graduates in the five years up to 2017. 85 people, including 76 managers of businesses in the city, graduated from the “Business Management Future School” held in Kesennuma City, and are now active as managers and leaders driving local industry. This time, we held a “New Product/Business Progress Reporting Session” where graduates of “Business Management Mirai Juku” etc. reported to Kentaro Oyama about the progress of their business.
[From Shigeru Sugawara, Mayor of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture]

We are very grateful that we have concluded an agreement with Iris Ohyama, which has supported us in various fields since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and that we will be able to collaborate in solving regional issues in an even wider range of fields in the future. Iris has a product lineup that covers all aspects of citizen life, including daily necessities, food, drinking water, furniture, home appliances, lighting, and air conditioning equipment, and is also actively working on decarbonization, DX, and supplying supplies during disasters. It is very reassuring to be able to collaborate with Ohyama, and we would like to use this opportunity to further strengthen disaster prevention, revitalize the region, and accelerate problem solving.
[From Kentaro Oyama, Chairman and Representative Director of Iris Ohyama Co., Ltd.]

At the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake, I was the representative secretary of the Sendai Association of Corporate Executives and launched the Tohoku Future Creation Initiative to contribute to and revitalize the region. We have produced 85 graduates since then, and we are very happy that they are contributing to their local communities. Kesennuma City is also close to our main factory, the Kakuda Factory, so we can quickly supply products in the event of an emergency. Through this comprehensive partnership agreement, we hope to work closely with Kesennuma City and advance our efforts to create a disaster-resistant city and contribute to further regional revitalization.
