Networld announced that it has delivered Japan’s first pure storage subscription service, “Evergreen//One,” to a major distribution company (name not disclosed). Kindril Japan handled the introduction.

Evergreen//One is a service that uses Pure Storage’s all-flash storage product “FlashArray//X” on a pay-as-you-go basis. At a major distribution company that has adopted Evergreen//One, the storage platform for its core system that was introduced between 2017 and 2018 has reached its maintenance deadline, and Kindril Japan is in charge of this update work. Kindril Japan proposed Evergreen//One because the major distribution company had to spend a large amount of money to replace hardware and adjust operations for the work, which was a huge burden. Since you can use the performance and capacity you actually need for a monthly fee, there is no surplus investment.

Pure Storage’s storage products were also praised for the fact that they can be upgraded without interruption, and those who subscribe to the Evergreen//One service can replace the storage controller with the latest one every three years free of charge.

This major distribution company was primarily operating Oracle Database on its storage platform before the switchover, and the new storage had strict requirements regarding input/output load and response time. Purchasing high-performance storage outright would be a huge expense, so the company seems to have decided that there is an advantage to a subscription model in which you only pay for what you use.

The major distribution company’s new storage platform was delivered and installed in June 2023, the transition from the old platform began in July, and all work was completed in December. The new platform’s response time, online processing, and batch processing were both the same or less than half that of the old platform. In particular, tape backup for disaster recovery has been reduced from about 20 hours to about 14 hours.
