In Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture, repairs to the gate, outer storehouse, and stone storehouse of Miyakonojo Shimazu House, which were damaged in a typhoon in 2020, have been completed. Additionally, an exhibition of works from the Miyakonojo City Museum of Art’s collection, “Sense of Wonder,” is being held. Let’s take a closer look at each.
Repairs to Miyakonojo Shimazu residence gate, outer storehouse, and stone storehouse completed
The restored gate
Repairs to the gate, outer storehouse, and stone storehouse of the Miyakonojo Shimazu residence, which were damaged by the strong winds and rain of Typhoon No. 14 that made landfall in southern Kyushu from September 18th to 19th, 2020, were completed in March.
Scene from the ceremony
To commemorate this, a ceremony was held on March 30th (Saturday), and the gate was opened for the first time in about a year and a half.
Damaged gate
The gate, outer storehouse, and stone storehouse of Miyakonojo Shimazu House are designated cultural properties by Miyakonojo City and registered tangible cultural properties by the country. The Gomon is a structure that can be said to be the face of Miyakonojo Shimazu Residence that welcomes visitors. It was newly built during the Army General Exercises in 1935, and received the royal carriage of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress when they stayed there in 1973.
Damaged external warehouse
The outer storehouse was purchased in 1882 and moved to its current location. It is a two-story storehouse designed to store valuables owned by the Miyakonojo Shimazu family for a long period of time. It once housed folding screens, screens, armor, and documents.
Damaged stone warehouse
The stone storehouse was newly built in 1930. In the past, folk tools and agricultural products were stored there, and it was used as a police station when Their Majesties the Showa Emperor and Empress stayed overnight.
At the time of the damage, the gate had fallen onto the road and was severely damaged, and the plaster on the outer walls of the outer storehouse and stone storehouse had peeled off. In addition, due to the effects of Typhoon No. 6 in August 2020, the number of damaged areas of the stone warehouse expanded.
Consideration of repair methods
Because the three buildings are valuable cultural properties, we used the construction methods used at the time of their construction under the guidance of Shigeru Sugazawa, a first-class architect and senior cultural property conservation and repair engineer who has been involved in the repair of cultural property buildings across the country. We proceeded with the work using the following.
Restoration of Gomon Roof Onigawara
