In 2023, the amount of hometown tax donations to Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture increased significantly, exceeding 300 million yen, 3.7 times the amount from the previous year. Behind this was the success of a former Dentsu employee.

Tomohiro Mori, mayor of Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, held a press conference on the 23rd with a relaxed tone.

Tomohiro Mori, Mayor of Yokkaichi:
“The total donation amount is 318.24 million yen. I think it’s a perfect score of 100.”

What was announced was the amount of hometown tax donations for 2023. The amount increased 3.7 times compared to the previous year.

Yokkaichi City had a hometown tax deficit of over 900 million yen due to citizens donating to other local governments. Behind the significant increase in donations was the success of a certain person.

“I think it’s the result of having people come up with various ideas for a year and pushing forward.”

Koichiro Kusaka (60), a former office worker at the advertising agency Dentsu, was hired by the city in May 2023 on the condition that he earn an annual income of 10 million yen, and has developed 181 new return gifts. In addition, we have continued to improve the campaign from the perspective of an advertising professional, such as by devising PR photos and catchphrases.

“We received a lot of donations because we differentiated ourselves by including a message to encourage people to choose Yokkaichi.”

Tomohiro Mori, Mayor of Yokkaichi:
“If we stop, we will lose. Over the past year, we have accumulated a large amount of assets, so we would like to try to increase the amount of donations.”

Eliminating the deficit will require further accumulation of donations, and Yokkaichi City is aiming for donations of over 500 million yen in fiscal 2024.
