Tsukuba Peony Garden, which opened in 1989, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. For 35 years, it has been a place to nurture rare peonies and other plants, providing a thrilling experience for visitors.

This year, as of April 23rd (Tuesday), 875 peonies and 1 peony are in bloom. Peonies usually end their best season in late April, but due to the low temperatures in March, this year’s blooming season is expected to continue until Golden Week. It is also a special time when peonies begin to bloom. Enjoy the beautiful combination of peonies and peonies, and the gentle scent of flowers that wafts through the garden. There are also plans to hold special exhibitions and other events to commemorate the park’s 35th anniversary.

[Special events such as the traditional peonies flower raft and the 35th anniversary of the park’s opening will also be held]

A variety of events will be held during the event, including a flower raft made of approximately 5,000 peonies, which is very popular every year, the newly released “Yakiimo Latte”, and a special exhibition commemorating the 35th anniversary.

◆Very popular every year – peonies floating on the water surface

The annual and popular “Peony Flower Raft on the Water Surface” is scheduled to be held at the healing area pond on the weekends of May 11th and 12th and May 18th and 19th. Flower Raft, which started in 2019, involves helping neighboring peonies farmers pick flowers, bringing back flowers that were scheduled to be discarded to our garden, and floating them on a pond as a flower raft. Currently, we have taken over the peonies at our garden and are growing them in a dedicated field. Although peonies are expected to bloom later this year, you may be able to see a different color than usual, such as early-blooming coral varieties.

In commemoration of the park’s 35th anniversary, we are selling “Green Hunt Notes”. In addition to peonies and peonies, there are also about 100 types of other flowers in the garden. There are also explanatory illustrations of the Tsukuba Peony Garden, which is also a huge biotope, so you can learn more about it and have fun walking around the park. Create your own book by drawing illustrations of plants and peonies that you find.

◆Historical exhibition commemorating the 35th anniversary of the opening of the park

In the gallery in the park, you can learn about the history of preserving the beauty of peonies and peonies that have fascinated many people, and the history of “Thoroughbred Miho,” a pesticide-free, enzyme-farmed compost that has been researched and developed for over 30 years. We are exhibiting “PEONY GARDEN HISTORY” which looks back on the past.

◆Exhibition and sale of beautiful art works

“Haiiro Ookami + Flower Shop Nishibeppu Branch” (Minato-ku, Tokyo) will exhibit and sell original mini lamps and glass specimens made from our garden’s peonies petals. In addition, an exhibition and sales event of ceramic artist Noriko Nakamura’s works will be held at the same time in the gallery space, where the warm light spilling from the pottery “House of Lights” will soothe the soul.

◆New products from “Harvest Cafe”

A new “Yakiimo Latte” is now on sale (700 yen including tax) made with sweet potatoes harvested from the garden’s farm.

Tsukuba Peony Garden will start growing sweet potatoes without using pesticides in 2022, and they will be roasted after aging to increase the sugar content. Using that roasted sweet potato, we created the best “Yakiimo Latte” with its natural sweetness.

◆Peony pots and thoroughbred compost are on sale at the “Gardening Corner”

At the “Gardening Corner,” located right next to the entrance to the park, we sell peony pots and thoroughbred compost that we have researched over many years. The staff at the peony garden will give you detailed instructions on how to grow peonies.

[About Tsukuba Peony Garden]

The park opened in 1989 and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

This is one of the world’s largest peony and peonies gardens, measuring approximately 20,000 tsubo, where 60,000 plants of 800 varieties of peonies and peonies, known as the “king of flowers,” have been planted by artisans who are particular about pesticide-free and enzyme farming methods.

Some of the plants are 150 years old, and there are also rare species found only here. Despite being a 40-minute drive from the city center, the natural beauty of the area is so beautiful that even kingfishers visit it, making it a biotope filled with the chirping of birds and the sweet scent of flowers. The theme of the garden is “GO NATURAL” because it is an earth-friendly place where children can play in the dirt without worry.

We provide a valuable experience that allows visitors to fully experience nature and return to nature.
