Nemophila flowerbed lit up with eco-power in Adachi Ward, Tokyo

After sunset, the wide flower beds look magical, like the shimmering sea.

Nemophila are in full bloom at Toneri Park in Adachi Ward, Tokyo. At night, more than 300,000 light-emitting diodes spread across the flowerbeds glow in waves as they change from blue to white, illuminating the small, pale blue flowers. Visitors to the park unanimously exclaim, “It’s beautiful” and “It’s so blue!”

Nemophila is an annual plant native to North America. At the park, the flowers were grown from seeds in a flower bed of about 2,000 square meters on the lawn and grown densely.

The illumination is part of the “Flower and Light Movement” event held by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. This is an attempt to propose a new way to enjoy metropolitan parks. Electricity is provided by biodiesel power generation using waste oil and other materials. The association says, “It looks like we can enjoy the flowers until the long holidays.” The illumination will be held from 6pm to 9pm until May 6th. (Koichi Togami)
