The one millionth person to become one was Sakura Tomoe from Nagano Prefecture and Asuka Horiguchi from Tokyo, who were sightseeing friends from their university days. Mayor Ito of Yamaguchi City handed them a bouquet of flowers, and they also received souvenirs such as Japanese sweets. I was also given an assortment.
The two chose Yamaguchi City as their travel destination after learning that it was featured in the New York Times as one of the “52 Places to Visit in 2024.” Mayor Ito said, “We hope to reach 1 million visitors.” I’m glad. Please enjoy Yuda Onsen and Yamaguchi City.”
The two had been visiting Yamaguchi for the past four days, and after the ceremony, they took a footbath to relieve their fatigue from the trip.
Tomoe said, “The footbath felt like it warmed my whole body and felt good.It was really fun to experience something out of the ordinary.”
Mr. Horiguchi said, “It’s a very nice town, and there was a temple that was under repair, so I’d like to come back.”
