Spring is finally here in Hokkaido! The cherry blossoms are blooming, and the mornings and evenings are finally getting colder, and the days are warmer.

For people living in Hokkaido, the joy of spring after a long winter is even greater. It’s the season when you can’t help but smile at the sight of trees and flowers sprouting green.

On the other hand, it is true that there are some things that make you want to frown a little at the beginning of spring.

On Hokkaido Television’s morning information program “Ichimoni!”, we asked people in Hokkaido about their spring troubles.

Q: What troubles do you have in spring?

1. Hay fever 1,864 people 18%
2. Road bumpy 3,909 people 39%
3. Temperature difference 3,829 people 37%
4. Others 633 people 6%

Hay Fever

Eniwa City, Female, 20s “My eyes are itchy and my nose hurts every year from blowing my nose too much. I use up all the boxes of tissues. The price hike for boxes of tissues is painful.”

Sapporo City Male, 30s “My eyes are rolling and my nose is sizzling, so I’m in trouble, but I haven’t gone to the hospital.”

Sapporo Female, 40s “I want to see the cherry blossoms, but I can’t enjoy them because my eyes are itchy and my nose is soggy! If only there was no pollen…”

Female, 50s, Sapporo City “I was really in trouble during the coronavirus pandemic. When I coughed and had a runny nose on the subway, I felt like people around me were looking at me like, ‘What?!’ It was tough.”

Makubetsu Town, Male, 60s “I have itchy eyes with symptoms such as a runny nose and sneezing, which is a symptom typical of this time of year!I didn’t have any symptoms of hay fever in the past, but since I developed allergic rhinitis, I have had hay fever symptoms. It’s out!”

It is said that there is no hay fever in Hokkaido! However, in Hokkaido, more and more people are suffering from birch hay fever.

Still, my hay fever has improved since I came to Hokkaido! I can still hear that voice.

Road bumpy

Wakkanai City Female, 20s “I’m going to get a flat tire on my bicycle (crying). I have to ride slowly and carefully.”

Female, 30s, Sapporo City: “Once, I got stuck in a pothole and flattened the front tire of my car, resulting in an unexpectedly costly expense…(tears) Since then, the bumpy roads have been traumatic for me.”

Asahikawa City Female, 40s “When I’m driving, I notice a pothole and try to avoid it, but I can’t avoid it and end up with a crash.”

Female, 50s, Kitahiroshima City: “It’s the same with roads, but if the sidewalks become so uneven that it becomes difficult to walk, I won’t do anything!”

Muroran City, Male, 60s “There are times when I feel like my car is going to crash while I’m driving.”

Potholes especially occur in the winter when there are many suddenly warm days. The cause is that melted water seeps into the road and freezes, making the concrete brittle.

Especially in recent years, it has become more common, and it’s scary! There were many people who said so.

temperature difference

Sapporo Female, 20s “I don’t know what to do because when I wear a cardigan, it’s hot and when I take it off, it’s chilly.”

Female, 30s, Sapporo “Due to the difference in temperature, I have trouble deciding what to wear. I choose my clothes based on Marimo who is reporting the weather outside and go to work in the morning.”

Sapporo City Female, 40s “It was cold in the morning, so I dressed my child in warm clothes, but when he came home from school he was sweating like a waterfall (sweat).”

Muroran City Male, 50s “It’s hard because I change my clothes from morning to night! Yesterday I used the car’s heater in the morning, and at noon I used the air conditioner for the first time this season!”

Ishikari City, Female, 60s “I have an allergy to temperature changes. I suffer from a runny nose and sneezing, so I need medicine for rhinitis.”

Many people suffer from cold and heat allergies that cause sneezing and runny noses. Particularly in families with children, there is a worry about what kind of clothes they should wear.

others

Eniwa City, female, 20s “Weeds appearing in the garden! The battle begins now”

Shihoro Town, Female, 30s “It’s yellow sand. I can’t hang my laundry outside to dry, and I can’t open the windows, so it’s a problem.”

Sapporo City Male, 40s “I have curly hair. It’s better in the dry winter air, but when spring comes and it rains instead of snow, my hair becomes curly.”

Sapporo City Woman, 50s “I don’t mind the bumpy roads, but I really hate the non-slip gravel and trash that comes out as the snow melts.”

Sapporo City Female, 60s “Dry and strong winds can get dirt in my eyes with contacts, making my eyes water, and ruining my eye makeup.”

Kamisunagawa Town, Male, 50s “It’s money. We have a lot of expenses such as welcome and farewell parties, graduation celebrations, and preparations for the new semester.”

Dust such as yellow sand and sand scattered on the road in winter is unpleasant! We received a lot of feedback.

What’s more, some say it’s difficult to spend in the spring.

Various troubles that I feel in spring.

Still, this season is the most refreshing time of the year in Hokkaido, as the long winter has passed and we are heading into summer.

How about spending the upcoming Golden Week feeling the comfort of the season?
