Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum “De Chirico Exhibition” venue
The work of Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), a painter who had a great influence on later artists with his “metaphysical paintings” (paintings that express the extraordinary world through fantastical landscapes and still lifes). A large-scale exhibition introducing this will begin in Tokyo.
De Chirico was born in Volos, Greece, to Italian parents.
Around 1910, he began painting paintings that expressed the extraordinary hidden deep within the everyday, which he later named “metaphysical paintings.” He had a great influence on avant-garde painters including the Surrealists.
After transitioning to classical works, he began recreating past “metaphysical paintings” and creating “new metaphysical paintings.”
Although these were sometimes criticized as “counterfeits,” Andy Warhol highly praised De Chirico as a pioneer of pop art, as he incorporated concepts of reproduction and repetition into his creations.
The exhibition comprehensively introduces de Chirico’s 70 years of painting career, from his early years to his later years. We will introduce the world to you in its entirety.
This will be the first large-scale exhibition of De Chirico’s works in Japan in 10 years.
The “De Chirico Exhibition” will be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s Special Exhibition Room from Saturday, April 27, 2024 to Thursday, August 29, 2024. Admission fee is 2,200 yen for the general public.
