Former Taiyo Village, Ibaraki Prefecture (Hokota City)

All over Japan, various events are happening every day. “What kind of land is there in Japan?” I (Katsusuke Nishina), who works as a photographer, set out on a trip to visit all the old cities, towns and villages that remained during the “Great Heisei Merger.” It came out. The number is over 2000.

This time, I had the opportunity to introduce them on the news site “Straight Press”, which disseminates information on local areas, local governments, corporate initiatives, new products, etc., so I started a series with photos.

It may have something to do with the local cities and towns that appear in “Straight Press.”

This time, we will introduce the former Taiyo Village (Hokota City) in Ibaraki Prefecture with photos.

Vol.209/Old Taiyo Village, Ibaraki Prefecture (Hokota City)

In March 1955, the villages of Shiratori and Kamishima merged to form Taiyo Village. In 2005, it merged with the former Asahi Village and the former Hokota Town to form the current Hokota City.

I crossed the Shikako Ohashi Bridge and entered the old Taiyo Village. As the name suggests, Old Ocean Village is almost parallel to the Pacific Ocean, and is also sandwiched between Kitaura, so the terrain is generally flat and the sky is wide. After entering the town, I was impressed by the wide variety of vegetable fields.

In particular, my image of Hokota City is of melons. An acquaintance from Ibaraki Prefecture also said, “When you think of melons, you think of Hokota.” Hokota City has ranked first in the nation in agricultural output for nine consecutive years, from 2014 to 2020. This is also the case when looking at the statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and there were no statistics available for 2020, so if it ranks first in 2020 as well, it will be the 10th consecutive year in Japan. It is truly the vegetable kingdom. By the way, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, melons are included in vegetables.

It’s beautiful to see the fields.

There is also a sense of nostalgia

After passing through a town lined with beautiful fields, I visited Taiyo Station. It is a station on the Kashima Rinkai Railway, connecting Mito and Kashima. I thought the station sign was “Taiyo TAIYŌ” and it looked sparkling, and there were hydrangeas blooming in the flowerbed in front of the station. The surrounding area is dotted with detached houses, giving the impression of a quiet lifestyle.
