[Headquarters]On the 25th, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium began exhibiting and showing to the public for a limited time a baby finned whale shark that has reached one year old and was raised in an artificial shark womb device developed by the museum. Until May 6th. This is the world’s first long-term captivity and exhibition of fin-finned whales.

The museum has been working on developing an artificial womb device for sharks since 2017. The baby shark on display this time was inside the womb of a dead finned whale. They were raised in an artificial womb for about a year starting in April 2022, and transitioned to normal seawater breeding on April 10, 2013.

According to Churaumi Aquarium, the finned whale is a small shark that is widely distributed in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is also known as the “glowing shark” because it has small light-emitting organs on its body surface that emit blue light.

The person in charge appealed to visitors, saying, “I don’t think you usually get a chance to see it, so please come and see it.”
