[Iheya]On the 11th of last month, a huge object was found washed ashore at Suugahama Beach, which stretches north of Iheya Village. Four circular objects with a diameter of about 10 meters are connected by ropes. Masashi Aragaki, head of the village’s fishermen’s association, said, “The fish washed ashore without hitting a boat or anything.”
On the same day, union president Aragaki rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a union member. He was surprised to find that the debris was bigger than he had imagined, and wondered where it had come from. Based on that, he speculates, “It’s probably a raft used for aquaculture.”
According to the Nago Coast Guard Station, the cause of the stranding is unclear.
According to the Water Rescue Act, local governments are responsible for disposing of floating debris. The village is considering storing it for six months and then handing it over to people involved in the fishing industry.
