The “Tosa Akaoka Dorome Festival,” where you can enjoy young sardine “dorome” and local sake, was held in Konan City, Kochi Prefecture, and was crowded with tourists.

The “Tosa Akaoka Dorome Festival” is held every year by an executive committee made up of fisheries cooperatives in Konan City, in order to let as many people as possible enjoy “dorome,” young sardines that are in season from winter to spring. That’s what I’m doing.

At the venue, a total of 250 kg of “dorome”, which were landed at local fishing ports from the morning of the 27th to the 28th, was prepared and sold raw or made into a local soup.

In addition, 20 people from inside and outside the prefecture participated in the main event of the festival, where participants competed to see the time to drink down a large plate of local sake in one go.

One sho (sho) of sake was poured for the men, and five cups (5 go) for the women, and the participants gulped it down in one gulp while chanting “gutto,” and the audience applauded.

We were blessed with sunny skies on the 28th, and about 8,000 people, including tourists and families, visited the venue and enjoyed “dorome” and local sake to their heart’s content.

A local man in his 60s said, “Dorome is fresh and delicious. Tosa’s sake is also dry and excellent.”

Additionally, a woman in her 20s who visited from Kagawa Prefecture said, “I was surprised that it was so much more exciting than I expected.I think it’s amazing how hard everyone drinks.”
