The Eternal City of Rome Exhibition will be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from September 16th (Sat) to December 10th (Sun), 2023.

The Eternal City of Rome was built around the Capitoline Hill, where the city hall of Rome is now located. Standing on that hill is the Capitoline Museum, one of the oldest museums in the world. The museum’s origins can be traced back to the donation of four ancient sculptures to the citizens of Rome by Pope Sixtus IV during the Renaissance.

The museum’s collections range from ancient relics and sculptures from the Vatican to paintings brought from prominent Roman families. Its rich collection is said to be superimposed on the history of Rome itself, which developed as the center of politics, religion and culture in Europe, based on the glory of the ancient Roman Empire.

In this exhibition, about 70 sculptures, paintings, prints, etc. will be displayed, mainly from the collection of the Capitoline Museum. From the founding of the country to its ancient glory, from the time of the popes to modern times, we introduce the history and art of Rome, which is called the “Eternal City”.

In 2023, it will be 150 years since the “Iwakura Mission” dispatched by the Meiji Government of Japan visited the Capitoline Museums. The delegation’s visit to Europe has had a major impact on Japan’s policy on museums in the future, and this milestone year is likely to be a valuable opportunity to view the museum’s collection in its entirety in Japan.
