Bob Dylan, Japan-led original project “Complete Budokan” will be released worldwide | NME Japan

Bob Dylan has announced that “Complete Budokan” will be released in Japan on November 15, 2023 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of his first visit to Japan in 1978.

Bob Dylan’s first visit to Japan was held from February to March 1978, and the album released under the title “Budokan” in November was later officially released worldwide.

It was recorded on February 28th and March 1st, 1978, but the master tape was discovered in 2007, and after long negotiations, it will be released as “Complete Budokan”. “Complete Budokan” is a complete recording of two days of live recordings, approximately 270 minutes long, and 36 of the 58 tracks are unreleased.

The Japanese edition products include “memorabilia such as tickets for the first performance in Japan, pamphlets, posters, flyers, etc.”, “a 60-page color booklet that summarizes airports, press conferences, live photos of Japanese performances, off-shots, liners, etc.” It will be released as a complete production limited edition with a luxurious specification that houses a “Japanese version booklet containing more than 50,000 characters of commentary, testimonies and secret stories of people involved, lyrics and translations” in an LP size box.

At the same time, it has been decided that “Another Budokan” will be released at the same time as a spin-off project of “Complete Budokan”. A set of 2 LPs that summarizes the performances that were not recorded in the 1978 album “Budokan” and were not released. , 11 unreleased songs and 5 unreleased versions performed on a different day than the original recording date.

In a liner essay on The Complete Budokan, music critic Edna Gundersen wrote that 1978’s Budokan “went a major reassessment in the decades that followed, with fans and critics admiring its adventurous arrangements.” “We have come to admire provocative performances.” And about her newfound work, she continued:

“At the Budokan, we see Dylan playing with vigor and full force. Singing with liveliness and urgency, his voice clear and melodic, his phrasing flawless as always… The band zips along, new Full of interpretive energy…[Dylan]probably saw the live performance as an attempt to bring the song to life.”
