In response to the issue of people in Tokyo and Osaka who ate gummies that may contain synthetic drugs similar to marijuana becoming ill and being taken to hospital one after another, Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Keizo Takemi said at a press conference on the 17th, “Experience tests have identified the drug.” If this happens, we are considering promptly designating it as a designated drug and banning its possession, use, and distribution.” He said he would also conduct necessary investigations into stores selling the products.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other authorities, the synthetic compound HHCH was listed on the gummy bags. HHCH has a structure similar to THC, a cannabis component that is regulated by law, but it is not regulated and is currently considered a dangerous drug.

Takemi emphasized, “We will carry out appropriate crackdowns to ensure that illegal drugs are not being sold, including in this case.”
