--

Epic Games has announced that the latest version (5.4) of its game engine “Unreal Engine 5” has been released. This version includes a test introduction of a new VR toolkit, a major overhaul of the animation-related system, and enhancements to rendering functions.

Version 5.4 introduces a new experimental toolkit that supports Meta-based VR headsets, Valve Index, and more. The tool utilizes the “XR Creative Framework,” and the user experience is said to be significantly improved compared to previous kits.

Unreal Engine 5 also makes rigging and creating animations for characters quick and easy. The Modular Control Rigs feature allows you to build animation rigs from modular parts.

“Motion matching”, which has been implemented as a test feature for some time, has also been officially introduced. A framework for animation functions that allows you to use the motion information of characters in a scene as a “key.” You can intuitively set the next move from the database.

Nanite, a virtualized micropolygon geometry technology, now has an experimental tessellation feature that allows users to add small details such as cracks and bumps at render time without changing the original mesh. The implementation of software variable rate shading (VRS) also significantly increases performance.
