  • sorae – Swirling storms and high-altitude clouds in Jupiter’s northern hemisphere, photographed by NASA’s Juno spacecraft

This was introduced by sorae in the article on June 11, 2022.Storms in Jupiter’s Northern Hemisphere“is. This photo was taken by NASA’s Jupiter spacecraft “Juno” during a close pass on November 29, 2021.

This is a storm swirling in Jupiter’s northern hemisphere (around 50 degrees north latitude). It was created using images taken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jupiter probe “Juno” from an altitude of 6140 km. Clouds are moving around the two large storms, creating a chaotic appearance. According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), this image can make out details down to 4 km in Jupiter’s massive clouds, which are about 11 times the diameter of Earth.

Juneau also captured many high-altitude clouds floating above the two storms. Although these clouds look very small compared to the swirling storms directly below, their typical width appears to be up to 50km. The high-altitude clouds that cast shadows on the storm whirlpools are water clouds that contain ammonia water, and are involved in the ammonia circulation by generating lightning in the shallows of Jupiter’s atmosphere and by producing ammonia water hail. It is thought that it will.
