Canonical started offering “Ubuntu 24.04 LTS” on the 25th. Long Term Support (LTS, long-term support version) comes with 5 years of support as standard, but it can be extended for 5 years with the paid Ubuntu Pro add-on and an additional 2 years with the Legacy Support add-on, providing up to 12 years of support. This version uses the latest Linux 6.8 kernel, improving syscall performance and accessing the Bcachefs file system. By integrating low-latency kernel functions, we aim to reduce the scheduling delay of kernel tasks. The desktop environment is also updated to GNOME 46, with performance and usability improvements such as a file manager, expandable notifications, and settings.

Additionally, the App Center has been revamped with a modern look, easy-to-understand categorization, and app management features. In line with this, firmware updates have been divided into dedicated apps to make them easier to manage, and the app no longer needs to be constantly running to check for updates, improving performance.

For developers, Python 3.12, Ruby 3.2, PHP 8.3, and Go 1.22 are included as standard. Java now defaults to OpenJDK 21, while maintaining support for OpenJKD 17, 11, and 8. It also introduced .NET 8 and included Rust 1.75 and the toolchain snap framework.

In addition, through collaboration with Intel, we have integrated Intel QuickAssist Technology (Intel QAT). This is the first integration for LTS, and will accelerate encryption and compression in environments equipped with 4th generation and later Xeon SPs, reducing CPU usage and improving the performance of network and storage applications. Furthermore, we are also working to strengthen functions for confidential computing.

Additionally, it is already possible to install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
