We will be holding a special exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Shohaku Museum of Art, “The Genealogy of Three Generations of the Order of Culture: Shoen Uemura, Shoko, and Junyuki”. | Press release

--

The Shohaku Museum of Art, a cultural project of the Kintetsu Group, will hold a special event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Shohaku Museum from Saturday, May 18, 2024 to Monday, July 15, 2024 (holiday). We will be holding an exhibition titled “Order of Culture: Three Generations of Genealogy: Shoen Uemura, Shotako, and Atsuyuki”.
Shoen Uemura became the first woman to receive the Order of Culture in 1948 for her exquisite paintings of beautiful women. Shoen’s son, Matsutaka, pioneered a new type of Japanese painting expression in the world of flower and bird paintings, and was awarded the same award in 1984. In 2022, Matsutaka’s eldest son, Atsuyuki, who has pursued the unique oriental painting space through flower and bird paintings, received the same award. The fact that three generations of Japanese painters have been awarded the Order of Culture is an unprecedented feat.
Although Shōen, Shōgo, and Junyuki each painted different subjects and styles, their passion for pursuing the beauty unique to Japanese painting and their underlying aesthetic sense have been inherited.
In this exhibition, we will look back on the artists’ careers and display around 60 masterpieces from each artist, including works from other museums. In particular, all of the works by Shoen Uemura (main paintings) are owned by other museums, including works that will be exhibited for the first time at this museum, such as “Evening of the Eclipse” (Oita Prefectural Museum of Art).
Everyone who visits the museum during this exhibition will receive a clear file commemorating the 30th anniversary of the museum’s opening.
Details are in the attached sheet.

〇About Shohaku Museum of Art
The Shohaku Museum of Art opened in March 1994 with donations of works from artists Shoko Uemura and Junyuki Uemura, and funding from the Kinki Nippon Railway Co., Ltd. (currently Kintetsu Group Holdings, Inc.).
The purpose of this art museum is to introduce the art of three generations of artists, including Shoen Uemura, Shoko, and Junyuki, through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of their works, sketches, sketches, and other art materials. In addition, special exhibitions and public exhibitions are held in order to widely popularize Japanese paintings and foster artists.

○Origin of the name of our museum
“Matsu” refers to the names of both painters Shoen and Shoko, and “Haku” refers to the 100-odd pine trees planted in the garden of the former residence of the late Isamu Saeki, honorary chairman of Kintetsu, where the museum is located. This name originates from the Saeki clan’s Haku or the name of the tea room in the residence, “Hakusentei.” The sound of “Shohaku” also has the meaning of being similar to “Shohaku”, which is an evergreen tree.
