Hyundai Ionic 5 N
expansion

On April 25, 2024, Hyundai Mobility Japan announced that it will introduce a new model, the IONIQ 5 N, in Japan and release it on June 5 of the same year. Prior to this, pre-orders for the special edition car “First Edition” will be accepted for a limited time from April 25th to May 30th.

Hyundai’s high-performance brand “N” was launched in 2015. The brand name comes from Namyang, South Korea, where the company has its development base, and Nürburgring, Germany, where development testing takes place. Pursuing the fun of driving from the beginning, we have created a variety of N cars based on the three pillars of “Corner Rascal (cornering performance),” “Racetrack Capability (ability to seriously drive on the circuit),” and “Everyday Sportscar (enjoy driving even on a daily basis).” The model was sent out.

As its name suggests, the Ioniq 5 N is a high-performance version of the Ioniq 5, and is also the first electric vehicle (BEV) under the N brand. Not only has the power been increased, but the power of various advanced devices has made it a car worthy of being called a sports car of the new era.

The power unit consists of two permanent magnet synchronous motors mounted on the front and rear, with the front generating a maximum output of 238PS and maximum torque of 370Nm, and the rear generating 412PS and 400Nm. The total system output is said to be 609PS and 740N・m, which can be increased to 650PS and 770N・m by using a boost function (10 seconds) called “N Grin Boost (NGB)”. The top speed is 260km/h, and the acceleration time from 0 to 100km/h is 3.5 seconds (3.4 seconds when using NGB). The driver can directly set the front/rear torque distribution ratio using “N Torque Distribution.” You can also enjoy the “N Drift Optimizer,” which optimizes drive force distribution and vehicle control for smooth drifting.

Hyundai’s latest 4th generation lithium-ion battery is equipped with a larger capacity of 84.0kWh than the standard Ioniq 5 by increasing the energy density from 618Wh/liter to 670Wh/liter. “N Battery Preconditioning” (2 modes: “Drag” and “Track”) optimizes battery temperature in advance, and “N Race” (“Sprint” and “Sprint”) energy management to provide optimal performance according to the driving situation. 2 modes of “Endurance” ensure sufficient mileage even on the race track. It is said that it is possible to complete two laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife with minimal performance optimization. Fuel efficiency values in WLTC mode have not been published.

The suspension has struts at the front and multi-links at the rear, and is equipped with a large-capacity variable damper that uses a wheel G sensor and a 6-axis gyro sensor. The rear is also equipped with an electronically controlled LSD. A large diameter 4-piston brake is installed at the front. In addition to being able to use regenerative braking with “N Brake Regen,” which boasts a maximum of 0.6G, “Left Foot Braking” is also available, which allows simultaneous operation of the brake pedal and accelerator pedal, such as when driving on a circuit.

Also unique is the “N e Shift,” which allows you to accelerate and decelerate as if you were driving an 8-speed DCT vehicle by using the steering paddles to virtually shift gears. A virtual tachometer is displayed on the LCD meter, and 6750 rpm (7750 rpm in N, the hardest drive mode) is used as the red zone for pseudo-shifting. The accompanying sound effects can be selected from “Ignition,” a sporty engine sound, “Evolution,” a harder engine sound, and “Supersonic,” which is inspired by an aircraft. When you reach the red zone, you can enjoy the effect (not only the sound but also the vibration of the car body) as if the rev limiter had been activated.

The exterior features an air curtain to improve aerodynamic performance and a special bumper with active air flaps to create a high-performance image. The lower part of the vehicle is decorated with a luminous orange strip exclusive to the N. The tires are specially developed “Pirelli P Zero” (275/35ZR21), which are combined with specially designed forged wheels.

The standard Ioniq 5 has a dedicated center console for the left and right walk-through front seats, and is equipped with knee pads. The steering wheel, which is equipped with various switches such as the drive mode selector, is wrapped in leather.

The special edition first edition features exclusive items such as metal door scuff plates, checkered footrests, and interior emblem, as well as “N Performance Blue” wheel center caps and N floor mats. Benefits include invitations to global motorsports events, owner-only ceremonies, and gifts of N brand goods.

The price of the Ionic 5 N First Edition is said to be around 9 million yen, and only 50 units will be sold. As mentioned earlier, purchase reservations will be accepted from April 25th to May 30th, 2024, and orders can be placed from June 1st to June 4th (the regular Ionic 5 N will be sold from the 5th onwards).
