UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Russia vetoed a resolution jointly submitted by the United States and Japan to stop an arms race in outer space at the United Nations Security Council on the 24th, resulting in the resolution being rejected. Ta. This has led the US to suspect some kind of cover-up by Russia.

Russian President Putin has already expressed opposition to the deployment of nuclear weapons in outer space. At the Security Council meeting that day, prior to the vote on the resolution, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Thomas Greenfield accused Russia of developing space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapons, but Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Nebenzha denied this.

The resolution was submitted after nearly six weeks of preliminary consultations, with 13 votes in favor, with China abstaining and Russia using its veto.

The Outer Space Treaty, signed in 1967, prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear weapons in Earth’s orbit. The draft resolution that day affirmed the obligation to comply with the treaty and called on each country to actively contribute to preventing a space arms race.

U.S. intelligence officials say their findings lead them to believe Russia could deploy nuclear weapons in space that would cripple its vast satellite network.
