The national comprehensive nuclear disaster prevention drill will be held in the prefecture for the first time in 11 years this year, assuming a serious accident at Kyushu Electric Power’s Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Satsumasendai City.
The country’s comprehensive nuclear disaster prevention drills are held every year in areas where nuclear power plants are located, and this year it will be held in Kagoshima Prefecture for the first time in 11 years since 2013.
The drill was conducted based on the assumption that a major accident had occurred at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant due to a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake, and the training involved employees and residents of nine cities and towns within 30 kilometers of the nuclear power plant, including Satsumasendai City and Kagoshima City. The Self-Defense Forces and others will also be participating.
The survey will be conducted in the second half of this fiscal year, and in light of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on New Year’s Day this year, the survey will confirm initial responses in the event of an accident and evacuation procedures for residents.
The prefecture has been conducting training in February this year based on the assumption of an accident at the Sendai nuclear power plant, and hopes that by confirming cooperation with the national government, it will lead to stronger countermeasures.
Governor Shioda said, “Based on the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, I would like to confirm through the training the wide-area evacuation of residents within and outside the prefecture and cooperation with related organizations.”
The prefecture will coordinate the specific schedule and content of the training in consultation with the national government and relevant local governments.
