A large-scale power outage occurred in Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, starting just after 3 a.m. on the 25th. According to Okinawa Electric Power Company, power had been restored to most of the city by noon, but the power outage lasted for about nine hours, causing confusion.

At elementary and junior high schools in the city, classes were held without fluorescent lights in the classrooms. Prefectural high schools and other schools were temporarily closed. Some supermarkets have also postponed opening. Resort hotels, where many tourists stay, are running their own power generators, but they responded by closing some restaurants and pools, and stopping some air conditioners.

According to Okinawa Electric Power, the cause is under investigation. The company’s investigation has not confirmed any problems with the generators, and there is a possibility that some kind of trouble has occurred in the power transmission. Therefore, power transmission will be resumed from the point where the soundness of power transmission has been confirmed, and the cause will be determined.

At Kita Elementary School in Hirara, Miyakojima City, children were attending classes in classrooms with the fluorescent lights turned off. Even at City Hall, emergency lights were turned on, and workers were working in darker darkness than usual.

Due to the power outage, Miyako Prefectural Hospital closed general outpatient clinics from the morning of the 25th. Miyakojima Tokushukai Hospital also closed its outpatient clinics.

According to the city, elementary and junior high schools are attending school as usual, but students are scheduled to attend school until mid-morning because school lunches cannot be provided.

JAL Group and ANA do not have any flight reductions or delays due to the power outage.

A woman in her 70s who was walking in a park in the city said, “When I woke up around 4:30 a.m., the electricity was out.I haven’t had any problems so far, but I think it will affect me in the future.” I would like to take measures such as preventing them from being opened.”

Miyakojima City Hall has switched to emergency power and has minimal lighting. In the dim light, city employees hurried to check what work could be done at around 9 a.m. on the 25th.

Hotel Beach Front Shigira Mirage is running its own power generator, so there will be no problems with the guest rooms for the next three days. A representative said, “Due to the effects of typhoons, we are always prepared for power outages. Some of our customers may not be aware of the power outages.”

At the Hilton Okinawa Miyakojima Resort, some restaurants and pool facilities have been closed due to the power outage, and some air conditioners have stopped operating. A representative said, “We are using it in a limited manner so as not to cause any inconvenience to our guests.”
