Advertisements start appearing in the Windows 11 start menu, how can I turn them off? – CNET Japan

--

Microsoft has begun rolling out an update that displays ads in the Windows 11 Start menu. We’ve been testing this feature in beta for a few weeks now. In the past, Windows 10 also displayed advertisements in the start menu.

According to the company, ads in the Start menu will display apps from the Microsoft Store from “a small number of carefully selected developers.” The ads will appear in the “Recommended” section of the Start menu, which previously only displayed recently used documents and images. Clicking on this ad will take you to the Microsoft Store where you can download the app.

According to the update’s description, the “Recommended” section will now show installed and popular apps in addition to ads.

For now, users can choose whether to apply this update or not. This update is “KB5036980” and is available in “Settings”[Windows Update] > [詳細オプション] > [追加オプション] > [オプションの更新プログラム]It can be installed from.

I installed the update a few hours ago and haven’t seen any ads yet. On the other hand, there are also users and articles saying that they have already seen the ads displayed. Microsoft may not turn on ads for most users until the update is rolled out to more machines.

Ads are also displayed in the Windows 11 search user interface.
