Last year, Google announced the integration of the ability to open and edit Office files such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in ChromeOS, but it wasn’t widely available yet. However, today, a new community post announced that this feature has officially been rolled out.

With this feature enabled, when you try to open a Microsoft Office file on your Chromebook, you’ll see a pop-up asking you to open or install an app in Microsoft 365. You’ll also be guided through the setup of connecting Microsoft OneDrive to your Chromebook’s Files app. Once you do this, you’ll be able to open Microsoft OneDrive files directly from your Chromebook’s Files app.

Note that if this feature is not enabled, the flag Enable Office files upload workflow ( chrome://flags#upload-office-to-cloud ) is enabled. However, in my case it was not available for my Google Workspace account, only for my personal Gmail account.

Google says the rollout will continue over the coming weeks, so keep in mind that there may be differences depending on your Google Account for now.
