  • sorae – The glow of a distant galaxy affected by gravitational lensing observed by the Webb Space Telescope

This was introduced by sorae in an article on December 24, 2023.Galaxy cluster “SDSS J1226+2152”“is. This image isThis is a pseudocolor image created based on data acquired by the James Webb Space Telescope’s Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam).

The image shows several galaxies that appear distorted by the gravitational lensing effect caused by the mass of SDSS J1226+2152. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the galaxy that is attracting the most attention here is called “SGAS J12265.3+215220.” The image of SGAS J12265.3+215220 is divided into two parts near the white galaxy located in the center of the image, one is a pink distorted image immediately to the right of the central galaxy, and the other is the image of the white galaxy located in the center of the image. It can be seen as a long, arc-shaped orange image a little far away on the right.

According to ESA, the galaxy observed as SGAS J12265.3+215220 is a galaxy that existed in the universe about 2 billion years after the Big Bang, or about 11.8 billion years ago.
